Sam Tisherman, MD

Lead Surgeon

Dr. Tisherman is a Professor of Surgery, the Director of the Center for Critical Care and Trauma Education, the Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit of the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Lead Trauma Surgeon for the EPR Clinical Trial at Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore.


Sam’s research is focused on novel approaches to managing severe hemorrhagic shock and cardiac arrest, with a special interest in therapeutic hypothermia. He joined University of Maryland Medical Center in 2014 after 20 years at the University of Pittsburgh, where he held several titles including Associate Director of the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research, Professor in the Departments of Critical Care Medicine and Surgery, and Director of the Neurotrauma Intensive Care Unit.


Sam received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in general surgery and fellowship in surgical critical care. He is a recipient of the Asmund S. Laerdal Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Trauma Resuscitation Science from the Resuscitation Science Symposium of the American Heart Association.
